How To Install Vinyl Plank Flooring (step By Step)

Hardwood floors may require a lot of maintenance. Maybe those old tiles are looking old and need to be repaired. Whatever the reason, many homeowners are considering vinyl flooring as a viable and affordable option for their new flooring. And the best part? You can install vinyl planks right over wood or tile – here’s how.

Vinyl flooring can be installed over many types of subflooring, including hardwood flooring. Of course, it is not an easy task. When you’re installing vinyl flooring, it’s important to have a clean, uncluttered surface, preferably a flat, level floor.

This means that you will need to replace or repair some parts of the tree that are uneven or damaged. It may take some work, but it is possible. Here are the steps you should follow to install vinyl flooring over wood.

Before you begin, you should follow these steps to ensure a smooth installation. Preparation and planning are critical to successful flooring projects. If you are installing on top of existing wooden boards, make sure they are securely fastened and will not cut. All subfloors must be properly sealed prior to installation.

There are several options for vinyl plank. The two with the easiest setup are peel-and-stick and click-lock.

Peel-and-stick tiles are very easy to install, but you need to be careful where you place them because they stick together quickly. That’s why it’s important to plan your plan in advance.

Another option is the lock button. Some types of tiles are called “floating tiles” because they are designed to float on top of other floors. These boards click together through the tongue and groove, and you use a rubber mallet to seal each joint. They don’t need an attachment. The hardest part of the installation is using the right knife to cut the edges and corners to fit.

Whether you’re doing a peel-and-stick or press-on lock, the process is pretty much the same. The main difference is that the peel-and-stick adheres to the floor, and a solid lock holds it in place.

How To Lay A Vinyl Tile Floor

Have your equipment and supplies easily accessible. You should have a mask so you don’t breathe in the smoke. When you’re ready to begin, remove all baseboards from the walls. After finishing the boards, clean the floors properly. Residual dirt, grime, and debris can prevent the tile from properly adhering to the floor.

If you want to know how to install vinyl flooring over tile, you’re in luck. The process is a little different with tile than with hardwood, but it’s the same. As with the installation of the floor, the complexity of the process varies, depending on the floor in question.

The precautions for installing vinyl over tile are the same as the precautions for installing vinyl over wood. To install vinyl, you need a clean and tidy place. This means you need to get rid of cracks and seams. To do this, you need to fill all the grout lines and make them flat and level. Also be aware of moisture-content because too much water in your grout can affect the success of your vinyl plank installation.

Favorite project EVER! Well, I’m talking about 50% of every project we do here, but this is on the charts of the most-transformative-for-the-smallest-budget.

If you’ve been following along on our master bathroom, Robert and I have been painting the walls, trim, and cabinets up until this past week. But the ceramic floor looks like this:

While we’ve saved ceramic tile in our kitchen and bathroom with grout paint in the past, this floor goes a long way. And since we’re all about the countertop and the bath right now (and maybe a real gut/renovation down the road), I wanted a floor that changed a little bit from the 80s beige.

Laminate Vs. Vinyl Flooring: How To Choose

Unless I want to go the tile painting and stenciling route like so many DIYers are doing these days. With a 3 month old in the house, I don’t like the smell of smoke and I want this job to be quick and installed in an hour or two.

Generally, if you are doing a major renovation, I would not recommend putting vinyl flooring over tile. I think for a permanent floor, it should be done the “right” way. But for a quick fix in Phase 1, it’s a great solution that DIY can take you through until you’re ready for a messy business.

So if you want to recreate some of your tile floors that have seen better days, here’s what we did.

2. When the plaster has dried for about 24-48 hours, you can sand the rough areas with fine sandpaper.

3. Sweep the floor and remove debris with a mop because you don’t want to trap anything under your vinyl floor.

4. Remove the quarter round and frame plates with a pick and hammer. Here’s a post to help you with that, if you haven’t done it before. Set the quarter trim around and the baseboards for re-installation after the vinyl sheet is in (assuming they are in good condition).

5. Measure the edges around the room and draw a picture of your room on paper with those measurements. Never a short time with this person around, even with the measurements. 😉

Also include the measurements of the curtains in the room. We removed our old toilet first (this is a great video on how to remove a toilet with a good angle to prevent water from dripping everywhere), so we measured where to Cut a second of our vinyl sheet for that.

7. Roll up your vinyl sheet and go to sleep. Just kidding. 😉 Well… if you do, we don’t blame you. Instead, roll up the vinyl sheet (don’t turn it upside down for the next step measuring/cutting).

8. Use your diagram as a reference to mark your measurements using a tape measure on the sides of the vinyl sheet to create a pattern.

10. Cut the vinyl sheet with sharp scissors or a utility knife. After your floor is cut, erase any remaining pencil lines (Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work great).

11. Pull your cut vinyl sheet into the room and roll it out. Cut the remaining areas with a utility knife as needed when you place them in the room.
