How Much To Tip (or Not Tip) In Every Situation

Tipping dates back to 18th century England, when an urn would be placed in pubs with a simple sign that read, “To Insure Promptitude.” It was later shortened to the acronym T.I.P. or “tip,” as it is currently called. Although originally a way of ensuring good service, tipping is now expected in most businesses where a personal service is provided.

Some establishments include a tip or gratuity in your bill regardless of the size of your party, but this is rare. Instead, tipping is an expected and integral part of any experience. In most cases, employees working in industries where tipping is expected to earn less than minimum wage, and rely heavily on tips. Currently, the average salary for waiters and waitresses is $2.12 per hour, most or all of which is used to pay taxes on their reported tips.

How do you know when and to whom to tip? What is the appropriate amount? Tipping expectations vary by service rendered. Some businesses, such as food and beverage service, personal grooming, bellhops and taxi drivers expect a tip every time a transaction is made. Other businesses are more flexible with their tipping standards.

For example, say a New York resident’s bathroom overflows at 2 a.m. and he needs to call a plumber. After researching NYC contractors on the Internet, he found one who was willing to go out despite the late hours. As a thank you, the resident can raise an expected $20 to $30 for the inconvenience as well as his satisfaction with the contractor’s service.

Bus and limo drivers, on the other hand, may be prohibited by company policy from accepting tips. For this reason, if you use a service and are unsure whether tipping is expected or discouraged, call the company first or do some research on the Internet. Often, this information is readily available and can help you avoid embarrassing situations.

Finally, regarding the recommended amount, it also varies according to the service performed. Restaurants and bars, which are the most likely places you’ll tip regularly, accept 10 to 15 percent. However, this increases to 15 to 20%, depending on the quality of the establishment and service provided. This tip should be calculated based on the full amount of the bill. Most businesses that rely on tips also follow this 15 to 20 percent guideline, or a flat tipping amount.

The next time you are in a situation where tipping is expected, don’t be caught unawares. Familiarize yourself with the accepted practices of the business you’ll be using, and you’ll find that your service provider will go out of its way to make sure your experience is as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. I’ll admit that when I first moved in, I had no idea this was a thing, and luckily I was put right away. Definitely a snub for those who carry your trash, manage parcels, and open the door for you if you don’t tip properly; even if you don’t know.

This is an important part of being a good tenant or landlord in your apartment block, and I want to make sure you get it right. They do so much for you all year long without more than a smile and a thank you, so now is your time to pay it forward (and be nice, it’s the holidays).
