A classic vintage now undergoing a veritable revival, Margate was once a dreary and bleak seaside resort that has made a spectacular comeback in recent years.

The golden sandy beach here certainly makes for an easy draw, but so do the modern antique shops, amazing seafood restaurants and the Turner Gallery, which has an outdoor space here.

Only add to the ad, and the distinctly independent and kitsch feel of Margate is teeming with hipsters.

Read more about how to travel from London to Margate, and the best things to do when you arrive in this city in the post I wrote.

Alternatively, don’t miss a visit to Ramsgate if you have the chance and say hello to the historic harbor here and to my friend Grant who owns the lovely and welcoming Bedford Inn pub!

Why Folkestone Is Kent’s Most Underestimated Seaside Town

Next, I show you just how different Kent is as we move from talking about seaside resorts to classic English heritage icons, such as Leeds Castle.

With Maze challenges, falconry shows, beautiful grounds, historical exhibitions and the castle itself, this is the perfect place to visit in Kent for all the family.

The fact that you can stay overnight here, with many accommodation options including glamping on offer, means this is one of the best castles in Kent.

Built in 1119, you can chart a lot of English history at Leeds Castle, which sits just outside Maidstone.

Use the train or your car to get here, or hop on a sightseeing tour from London, which includes Leeds Castle and Canterbury Cathedral and Dover too.

The following are some classic shore excursions and favorite day trips for Londoners looking for the best seafood the country has to offer!

Of course Whitstable is one of my favorite places to visit in Kent, and is popular for its oysters, antiques and beautiful beach houses.

Unlike Margate, the beach here is a bit smaller, but Whitstable is smaller and more upmarket and the community feels it in my opinion.

The number of independent antique shops and excellent restaurants is the same although there is the opportunity to enjoy the Oyster Bay Trail and then the Viking Coastal Trail, which is 2 meters or 2 wheels here, so if you have time you can really walk everywhere. the road from Whitstable to Margate!

Run by English Heritage, (so free entry if you’re a member of this club) Deal Castle dates back to the time of Henry VIII and is an absolute gem when considering places to visit in Kent.

Located near the pretty village of Deal, not far from the main port of Dover, it goes without saying that this building was built to protect the coast from French invasion.

Entry prices are really reasonable for this attraction and there is a historical audio guide for adults, as well as a whole range of activities and shows that are often put on for children.

OK, now we’re starting to step it up and get some important history on this iconic place to visit in Kent.

Of course the Medieval city of Canterbury, home to one of the world’s most famous Cathedrals (UNESCO-listed and home to the Church of England), is absolutely unmissable if you spend any time in this part of England.

A tourist destination since the Middle Ages, audio tours can be purchased to learn more about the history of this ancient stone-built city, which has been a place of worship for 1400 years.

Isle Of Thanet

For more modern tourist ideas, river cruises, winery tours, wine tastings, ghost tours and city tours can all be enjoyed at this beautiful location.

And now we’re at number 6 on this list of the best places to visit in Kent and it’s time for another castle.

This time Hever Castle, a 700-year-old beauty full of beautiful gardens and grounds, a maze, miniature model houses, a military museum and, yes, a beautiful castle!

It’s worth pointing out that the Christmas season in this piece of English heritage is a magical time of the year to visit as the whole area is beautifully decorated.

And oh my God, more history, but this time one that has not been well preserved, but it is not under the atmosphere in it!

Of course Reculver Towers, which sits along the Kent Coast between Whitstable and Margate, is a great place to wander, not least because it sits high on a cliff and can be visited as part of a coastal walk that stretches all the way. The wonderfully named Sealsalter town, is located on the Isle of Thanet where Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs are located.

These towers date back to Roman times when there was a castle here, but they still look very beautiful.

You can cycle here as part of the Oyster Trail, or drive and park just a short distance away.

Try to catch the Towers at golden hour and you’ll get some great photos… made even more fun by the fact that this place is free to enter too!

After enjoying the Reculver Towers, it’s time to continue to nearby Herne Bay, where the historic castle and promenade capture the most British seaside vibes you’re likely to encounter!

There are also great artistic endeavors to get involved in in Herne Bay, from admiring the bronze sculptures along the coast, to enjoying some candle or soap making sessions at a local artist’s studio – all because of taking in this delightful place!

I mentioned the Isle of Thanet above, and the jewel in its crown (in my opinion) which is Broadstairs.

A perfect backdrop for country life in this coastal sweep, you can visit independent cinemas, bookshops and a host of pubs in this English gem, plus eat out at nearby Botany Bay – what more could you want?!

Or why not combine a pub and bookshop visit at my favorite place here – The Chapel!

Yes, that’s on offer, right on the coastal path leading to Ramsgate or Margate (Broadstairs is in the middle!)

Another great thing about Kent, in case you hadn’t noticed, is that there is no shortage of fantastically named places to visit!

Of course from Sealsalter to Deal, Loose to Plucks Gutter, there is absolutely no end to the classics, but perhaps my favorite has to be the old gem, The Sandwich, and No Name Street along with it – they were running out of names when they got here. !

Sandwich is located between Ramsgate and Deal, along the Kent Coast, and is actually one of the best preserved medieval towns.

This means just wandering around here for a few hours is a wonderful way to take in the ancient architecture in awe.

Don’t miss stopping at one of the great restaurants, walking the English Coastal Path that passes through here, or visiting the weekend market – it’s all fun!

We’re now leaving the county’s coast and approaching London, as we enter number 10 on our list of the best places to visit in Kent, via the historic town of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Famous for its healing waters and clean air, once a favorite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, this is an easy day trip from London with great shops and preserved historic features, including the Pantiles promenade.

And after all that sightseeing, you might want to sit down and enjoy a drink and what better place than Chapel Down Vineyards, for one.
