How To Find Design Clients

If you want more interior design clients, you need to attack the problem from multiple angles and avoid having only one source of leads. !

Ideal Interior Design Clients: 3 Super Useful Tips To Find Them — Online Interior Design School By Alycia Wicker

You should also be doing some form of lead generation every day (even when you’re busy delivering work to clients). This is how you will have a steady line of clients waiting to work with you, with work booked months in advance.

Most lead generation activities are not particularly scalable – they require hard work, consistency and persistence. And most designers I meet who aren’t getting enough work simply aren’t putting in the effort needed to see the results they want.

⚠️ Warning: Lead by building relationships first – NOT by just walking up to someone and asking them for something.

There is nothing worse than getting cold emails, calls or DMs from people who clearly have no business wanting to give up on your success. Trust me, I get these emails daily and delete them all!

How To Find Clients From The Futur

Building partnerships is a strategy that requires a lot of effort on your part. It also takes time to build relationships and develop them to the point where people are willing to send work your way.

But if you put in the effort, it will definitely pay off in the long run and this is one of the basic strategies I used to build my own interior design business.

💡💡 I share more tips for improving your website in this YouTube video if you need more help with this. 💡💡

There’s more to this strategy to really get the most out of it – I share details in my lead generation short course.

Another immediate improvement you can make to your business today is to put together your customer welcome package. Here’s one I created for you – all you have to do is drop in your business information and start sending.

Most good designers get most of their work from referrals (which is fantastic because it means you’re doing great work).

BUT…the problem with this strategy is that many designers rely on client referrals as their only new clients. They think their business will continue to thrive with customer referrals, so they don’t put effort into other lead generation strategies. If you operate like this, then you are putting your business at great risk because you never know when that flow of referrals might slow down or even stop.

Perhaps the biggest challenge with freelancing is finding new clients and selling your work. If you’ve never done it before, selling can be incredibly intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be.

Before you start contacting clients, it’s important to build an online presence that showcases your skills, showcases your best work, and inspires trust.

Clients will look at your online footprint when evaluating whether to hire you, so making a good first impression is key. At a minimum, we recommend the following steps:

Your first step should be to register a domain name that properly represents your business. We recommend choosing something simple; when in doubt, use your name or a combination of your name and keywords like “design”, “code” or “studio” and check out our guide on How to choose a domain name. If possible, get a .com or .org domain.

Your site can be simple to begin with. Choose a few of your favorite projects, ideally projects where you have been able to provide significant value. If you have no previous work experience, demo projects are also fine. WordPress is perfect for this, but you can also use any of the website building tools.

Clients are looking for designers and developers who demonstrate critical thinking and creative problem solving, and who put business goals above aesthetics. So make sure you show off your work when describing each project. We recommend covering the project background and business goals, your role on the team, your approach to the problem, and the results of your work.

We suggest adding a link to your business website on each account and writing a clear and concise summary of your services on LinkedIn. Of course, make sure that none of your accounts display anything that customers might find inappropriate or offensive.

There are many ways to find leads, but some are more effective than others. Here are the most common channels and how to get the most out of each.

Freelance marketplaces like UpWork and Freelancer.com are incredibly popular. Every day, thousands of companies use these sites to find and hire freelancers.

However, these markets are also extremely competitive. If you choose to use these marketplaces, you will compete mostly on price. Remember, it’s a numbers game. When you first start out, expect to win less than 5% of the projects you pitch.

Cold contacting isn’t glamorous, but if done right it can be incredibly effective, especially if you’ve chosen a specific niche. For example, if you create websites for local restaurants, methodically reaching out to potential customers on LinkedIn is a great way to boost business.

As with any pitch, remember to be positive, polite and persistent while avoiding crossing the line and becoming a nuisance. If your customer hasn’t responded after 3-5 messages, they’re probably not interested and it’s time to move on.

How I Find New Clients As A Freelance Web Designer

Many job boards list freelance opportunities in addition to full-time work. If you use job boards, expect to go through a similar application process to that of a full-time job.

Social media is an extremely underrated medium for finding freelance roles, especially since you can use it as both an inbound and outbound channel.

To get started, write posts about your new freelance business on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Keep your posts simple; advertise your business and the services you offer and tell people how to contact you.

You can also use social media as an outreach channel by searching for people who need your services and contacting them directly. For example, a Twitter search for “freelance designer” yields thousands of opportunities posted in the past day alone.

Don’t forget your network! Even if you think you don’t know any potential customers, you’ll be surprised how useful your network can be.

Reach out to former colleagues, friends and family to let them know about your new business and ask if they know anyone you should contact. Also, ask if they know of freelancers who offer additional services; for example, if you are a designer, ask about developers and vendors. These freelancers often get requests for the type of work you do, so building a relationship with them can be a fantastic source of work.

Professional groups are another fantastic source of freelancers. Look for freelance groups—both in your own field and in complementary fields—as well as in any industry or groups where your potential clients hang out. Public Slack Groups and local meetups can be great places to connect, and companies looking for freelance help are often members.
