Unfortunately, at the time, I was basically dead and had no spare change to do such a thing.
Laminate Vs. Vinyl Flooring: How To Choose
You see…eight years ago, floating floor systems such as LVT or LVP had not yet evolved into what they are today—with the obvious use for installation over pre-existing subfloors. In fact, at the time what I knew was my only option involved the tedious and messy task of demolishing my existing floors and then paying a hefty premium to a subcontractor to install new flooring.
And so…I lived with floors that I absolutely hated for about four years…that is…until I came across a click and lock flooring system that the manufacturer’s instructions for Claimed that I could lay over the dirty ceramic tiles in my kitchen.
Since that discovery, I’ve used two other types of flooring throughout my 1980 Rancher, so I thought I’d use this post to show you the different options that exist for this unconventional type of application.

Can You Put Hardwood Over Tile?
LVT was my first step into the world of floating flooring. As you can see in the photo above, my husband and I used luxury vinyl tiles to cover the dated ceramic tiles in my kitchen (you can read my LVT install tutorial here), and it made a world of difference. is
The beautiful thing about LVT is that it is great for areas exposed to water because the product is waterproof (unlike traditional hardwood). I found the product to be very low maintenance due to the absence of grout and the inevitable dingy grout line issue that comes with traditional tile.
The installation of this product is relatively beginner friendly and we were able to completely transform the look of our kitchen within a week.
Not all luxury vinyl tile is suitable for installation over existing tiles, so you need to ensure that it is clearly stated in the manufacturer’s instructions as “suitable for installation over existing tile subfloor”.
Power Of Patterns: Lvt Flooring Design Ideas
If the LVT flooring isn’t thick enough, you risk the telegraph effect where the grout lines of the ceramic tile begin to surface through the new flooring for a not-so-pretty vibe.
Luxury vinyl tile and luxury vinyl plank are essentially the same product. Both are waterproof and require no grout or sealing, although luxury vinyl plank comes in long pieces and is more ideal for a wood-like effect.
While you might think I had tiles installed in my bathroom, this particular type of click and lock flooring was actually a plank….
As with LVT, you need to make sure that the luxury vinyl plank product you go with has thick enough padding attached to avoid the risk of telegraphing. From a distance, you’d never guess that the flooring in my bathroom (you can read more about my bathroom here) wasn’t real tile.
Things To Consider Before Installing Floating Floors Over Old Tile Flooring
Two years ago, my mind was completely blown when Shaw Floors wanted to collaborate with me on a brand new type of engineered hardwood that could be installed over tile and hardwood subfloors like LVT or LVP.
I decided to install engineered hardwood planks in my foyer (which had very ugly ceramic tiles) and in my dining room, living room, and bedrooms (which had solid hardwood that looked like it came straight out).
What was even better about floating wooden planks was that they were both waterproof and scratch resistant. What I find even more useful about this product than LVT and LVP is that when we went to sell our house this year, we were able to boast in the MLS description that the house had brand new hardwood flooring.
While floating hardwood planks can be a bit more expensive than luxury vinyl products, if you have resale value in mind, this is definitely something you want to consider.
Can You Install Tile Over A Porch Floor?
Given the cutting-edge nature of this particular product, it may be the only hardwood option on the market that can be installed over a tile subfloor. At least, this is the only product I have come across of its kind.
Although I have never personally used laminate flooring with an attached pad, it is comparable to most vinyl products in that it is DIY friendly and similar in appearance.
I would say the biggest difference between vinyl and laminate (at least in terms of function) is that vinyl is completely synthetic and laminate is not.
Given laminate has a core of wood by-products, it is not the best choice for rooms exposed to water such as bathrooms or kitchens.

In terms of looks, however, if you’re going for a hardwood floor vibe, laminate’s aesthetic may be a little more convincing.
As with any product, you need to ensure that the manufacturer classifies the product as suitable for installation on tile. Not all laminates are created equal!
Having lived with LVT, LVP and floating hardwood planks for years, I can personally attest that they are all very viable options and we have never had a problem with telegraphing.
With so many different flooring options to choose from (technology is just as weird) I hope you see now that there really are no more excuses for living with ugly tile floors!

Click Lock Vinyl Plank Flooring: A Comprehensive Guide
Laminate and engineered hardwood can be installed over tile floors using the floating method, essentially the same method as installing vinyl plank flooring over tile. The planks can be locked together using a click and lock or tongue and groove mechanism. Most laminate and engineered wood planks require you to purchase rolls of underlayment and lay them before the laminate floor. Can solid hardwood flooring be laid over tile?
Unlike other types of flooring, solid hardwood must be fixed to the subfloor by nailing/stapling or gluing. You cannot nail or staple solid hardwood to tiles, so the only option is the glue-on method.
We would strongly advise against doing this unless your tile floor is completely flat. Sometimes it is easier to install a new 6mm plywood subfloor or remove the tiles. If you want to glue solid hardwood to tiles make sure you use a good adhesive. You can check a plank the day before and see if it is holding the next day. Consider floor height.
Be sure to take into account what the floor height will be once your new floor is installed. Sometimes doors need to be cut and floor transition strips added to accommodate the new floor.
