Madeleine Clark, an SEIU care worker who spoke at the event, called long-term caregivers essential workers, saying: “We take on responsibilities comparable to nurses’ aides, hospice workers, counselors, physical and behavioral therapists. . . We may work long, even unpaid hours and lose sleep worrying about others because we have empathy, compassion, and a heart for others. We certainly don’t do it for the paycheck. However, Clark emphasized, “a paycheck is important.”

Ihss Providers May Be Eligible For $1200 Tax Credit

The Living Wage Calculator provides estimates by county of how much individuals need to earn to cover basic living expenses, including food, housing, medical care, child care, transportation and taxes. In Shasta County, the tool indicates that a living wage is $13.97/hour if the person pays for themselves only but increases exponentially when the person pays for one or more children.

Salaries for IHSS workers vary by county. SEIU 2015 recently announced a salary increase of sixty-five cents over the minimum wage in Lake County, bringing workers’ wages to $14.65 an hour. In Shasta County, where the IHSS base wage rate is currently $14.60, recent labor negotiations yielded an offer twenty-five cents an hour more than the minimum wage, according to Arnulfo de la Cruz, an executive vice president of SEIU 2015. Unions are pushing for more.

De la Cruz said the IHSS wage increase would be an investment in Shasta County’s economy because a relatively small percentage of IHSS wages are paid by the county, with the rest of the funding coming from state and federal sources. He said that by raising the wages of their largest publicly funded workforce, Shasta County could stimulate new local spending and economic growth.

While the level of care varies depending on the needs of home clients, some IHSS staff provide significant levels of support that include a number of skilled tasks. For clients who would need institutionalization without in-home care, the state of California says IHSS care providers represent a significant cost savings to taxpayers.

Step 4 – Next, you’ll be presented with three check boxes, each labeled: “New,” “Change,” and “Cancel.” Place a check mark in the check box labeled “New” if you are starting a brand new direct deposit transfer to your account.
