How To Make Easy Dog Treats At Home – Last week we took Yoda to the vet. His leg was bleeding and badly bruised and we weren’t sure what had happened. The vet said he caught his leg on our garden fence. He was given medication and sent home. The vet also noted that our little Bichon was overweight. This is not an easy task when you have two dogs and they often steal each other’s food. I think the best thing we can do is feed our dogs small amounts and give them healthy treats in moderation. It’s a work in progress and today I’m sharing a list of delicious and healthy homemade treats that your dog will love.

A healthy diet is just as important for our pets as it is for humans! Of course, too much of a good thing can still be a bad thing. So, be sure to feed your dog these healthy homemade treats in moderation.

Dogs love pumpkin, and as long as the pumpkin you use isn’t sweet, it’s great for them! Make sure you don’t use pumpkin pie filling, which often contains sweeteners and additives. Pumpkin puree should have pumpkin as the only ingredient listed on your box.

Likewise, the peanut butter you use must have peanuts as the only ingredient listed. Make sure there are no additives that could harm your dog.

And if you’re wondering how to make oatmeal…don’t stress! Just grind up some regular quick or rolled oats from your pantry and you have oatmeal!

I decided to use all oat flour for this recipe because many dogs are sensitive to wheat. BUT…if your dog is not sensitive to wheat, then make this recipe with whole wheat flour and no oats!

Recipe For The Best Peanut Butter Dog Treats

If you want to know how to cook sweet potatoes according to this recipe, you can peel and boil cubed sweet potatoes. Then mash it as you would for mashed potatoes. You can even freeze mashed sweet potatoes in silicone muffin liners for easy portioning!

Or…bake the whole sweet potato at 425 degrees F for 40-55 minutes until the sweet potato is tender and the skin has pulled away. Once the potatoes are cool, remove the skin and freeze whole sweet potatoes! When you need it, take it out of the fridge and quickly defrost it in the microwave. Mix with a spoon or by hand. I find it easier to mix this dough with my hands because it is a bit sticky.

If for some reason the dough seems a little dry to you, just add water or unsweetened oat milk. OR…a little more peanut butter or sweet potato. And if the dough seems too sticky, then a little more flour will help it harden.

Homemade Pumpkin Dog Treats Recipe (no Peanut Butter)

Although this dough is a bit sticky, I find it very easy to roll out on a silicone mat with a rolling pin. Roll out the dough to a thickness of ¼″ and ½″. Since there is no raising agent in this dough, the cookie thickness at this stage will be the thickness of a baked cookie.

Placing a piece of wax paper over the dough and using a rolling pin wrapped around the wax paper will prevent the dough from sticking to the rolling pin.

Don’t be afraid to overwork the dough. You can reassemble it and add a little more wet ingredients. Water, unsweetened oat milk, or a little more peanut butter or pumpkin will all work. Then roll out the dough again.

Or…leave these treats out for 15 minutes, which will take some time for your dog to enjoy!
