My mom used to make this pizza all the time when we were kids. It can feed so many people!
I am the youngest of four siblings and our house seems to have grown as the hangout for all our friends.
I’m not sure why they all always came to our house, but maybe it was my mom’s cooking that kept them around!
My mom pointed out that homemade pizza was one cheap way to feed all those kids, and who doesn’t love pizza right!?

Making homemade pizza is a newer tradition because it originated with…my mom! She just passed last weekend and we made the pizza together!
So I’m sharing real pictures with you while we made it! Oh and my daughter helped too! The children should be involved when possible.
I always like to take my own photos of what the food actually looks like so you know you don’t need a huge kitchen to cook in (mine is super tiny!) or feel expected to make gourmet meals in the mirror!

All the ingredients for homemade pizza are shelf stable or can be frozen! That way you can make it whenever you want without having to run to the store to pick up a random ingredient.
What I like to do is stock up on sauce, cheese, and your favorite topping of choice (I love pepperoni and green olives!) so you have everything on hand.
The sauce is shelf-stable, the cheese can be frozen and the toppings can be frozen or canned! (like mushrooms, black olives, green olives!)

You don’t need a pizza pan if you don’t have one (although they are nice!) I made one on a regular pan and just made a circle out of it. I have a Wilton pizza crust pan and it does make a crispier crust than the one made on the cookie sheet! So if you have a choice, use the pizza pan to get a crispier crust and a more uniform shape.
I have used both the active dry yeast and the instant yeast and they both work great! The difference is with the active dry yeast, you have to activate (or reheat it) with hot water that is a very specific temperature. I just mixed the instant yeast with all the other ingredients of the dough, there is no need to activate it.
***UPDATE*** I started using the instant yeast and use 1 and 3/4 teaspoons instead of the yeast package and it works amazing!! You still add the same amount of all the other ingredients but you don’t have to worry about it working! I also don’t have to mess with the water temperature, just make sure it’s warm.
So first of all let’s start with the homemade dough. It’s a lot easier than you think it would be, and a lot tastier than the pre-made dough from the store!

The hardest part is activating the yeast so I would recommend using a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the water.
Another trick is to heat your measuring cup under the same water so it doesn’t lose heat while being transferred.
So once you have a cup of warm water, mix in your yeast packet (I like Fleischman’s yeast packets), 1/2 tsp salt and 1 tsp sugar and let it sit.
After a few minutes you should start to see it spinning which means it’s powered on.

After it finishes spinning, about 5 minutes or so, go ahead, add in the 2 1/2 cups of flour and mix with a fork.
This recipe makes 2 medium sized pizzas or 1 larger pizza. Divide the dough into the desired sizes. I always make the larger pizza with the recipe as I prefer a slightly thicker crust.
Now you’re going to start rolling it. You can start by putting some flour on your surface.
With the help of your hands, start pushing it flat and in a circular shape. Then you can start rolling it thinner with a rolling pin.

Once you get it the size you want or the size of your pan you can pick it up and put it in your pan.
After you have your dough on the pans, the next step is to spread the sauce all over. I usually just use store bought pizza sauce, I’ve even used regular marinara sauce with some vintage herbs!
This is a great place to let the kids start helping out if you want to get them involved. Using the back of the spoon, smooth the entire sauce.
Then sprinkle with salt, black pepper and oregano and it’s ready to go into your 425 degree oven!
How To Make Pizza At Home Without Oven
Cook one pizza at a time for about 20 minutes. I tried to cook two pizzas at once and it just doesn’t work. Just cook one pizza at a time and it will turn out great!
During the last 5 minutes or so, slide the pizza out of the pan directly onto the oven rack so the bottom is nice and crispy! *If you cook it on a pizza pan with the little air holes in the bottom, you may not need to slide it until the last 2-3 minutes. Those little holes really get the bottom brown and crispy.
Watch carefully, and carefully remove when nice and brown on the bottom. Let it sit for a few minutes on a rack (a very important step to get that crispy crust!) a few minutes and slice into squares or triangles!
Let the pizza cool on cooling racks before cutting. This allows the crust to be nice and crispy and not soggy.
