Spears was equally excited to work with John. “I was so honored when the incredible Sir Elton John asked me to join him on one of his most iconic songs. On September 27, the song’s music video officially debuted. The colorful visual features a cast of extraordinary dancers, channeling feelings of intimacy and emotion through movement. John and Spears do not appear in the video.
Filmed in Mexico City, the “Hold Me Closer” video was directed by award-winning director Tanu Muino. His previous credits include Lil Nas X’s Montero, Harry Styles’ As It Was, Cardi B’s Up, Yungblud’s Fleabag,” and Lizzo’s “Rumors,” among others.
“This was emotional for me growing up with Britney. After seeing ‘Slave For You,’ I decided I wanted to become a video director,” Muino gushed in a statement. “Elton John is an icon that I and the world grew up listening to.” “
“I knew there would be a lot of emotional expectations that the audience and fans would have. With this responsibility, I had to do something different and unexpected,” he said. “The visuals had to be different. The dance had to be forward-thinking to raise the eyebrows and make Elton and Britney proud. To capture this magic, we shot around my favorite architectural locations in Mexico City and brought in choreographer Jacob Jonas, who makes the best contemporary choreography today. Getting the best dancers, crew and access to some of the most private places in the world was simple because everyone wanted to work with Elton John and be a part of his legacy.”

News of the collaboration broke in July, when ET learned that John and Spears had recorded a duet of the hit and the new version would be released the following month.
Soon after, the stars’ cover art for the remix was revealed, featuring photos of the two as children. While Spears was her own little dancer — literally — in a throwback class photo, fans got to see John as a pint-sized pianist.
Even more recently, the “Rocket Man” singer shared some of the song with fans in a video posted to Instagram. At the time, he played the track and sang along for guests at a restaurant in Cannes, France.
It’s been two years since Spears released any music. Back in 2020, three tracks were widely released for the deluxe reissue of her 2016 album,

, including “Swimming in the Stars” and “Mood Ring.” In November 2021, her conservation was officially ended after 13 years.
“Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy!!! I think I’m going to cry the rest of the day!!!!” she tweeted at the time with a clip of fans celebrating outside the courthouse. “Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen ???? #FreedBritney.”
Spears and John first met in 2014 when they were both at the 22nd Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party. But it was Spears’ tweet in 2015 that sparked the idea for a collaboration. According to a press release for the track, after hearing the first cut of the single earlier this summer, John knew that Spears’ instantly recognizable vocals were the perfect touch to bring the song to life. Reaching out to her directly, Spears immediately said yes.
Speaking to the media and fans, her lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, said, “What’s next for Britney – and this is the first time this could be said for about a decade – depends on one person: Britney.” Elton John. and Britney Spears released her official video for Joel Corry’s remix of “Hold Me Closer.” Although neither singer appears in the new visual, their style is on display throughout the new visual. The couple was also absent from the original “Hold Me Closer” video.

Corry’s euphoric remix of the song arrived earlier this month and is the first official remix of the song. John and Spears’ original version — a dance-driven reimagining of John’s classic “Tiny Dancer” with nods to other gems including “The One” — dropped in late August. The collaboration marks Spears’ first new music in six years and follows her being released from her 14-year hold.
On Friday, Corry dropped the lyric video for his latest single “Lionheart (Fearless)” featuring Tom Grennan. Last year, Corry teamed up with Jax Jones for “Out, Out” featuring Charli XCX and Saweetie, and created a remix of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.”

Elton John on Thursday night released his new single, “Hold Me Closer,” a blistering duet with Britney Spears that pairs John’s early 1970s classic “Tiny Dancer” with the title track from his 1992 album “The One.”
As shameless as it is delicious, the new song is a clear bid to replicate the success of “Cold Heart,” John’s 2021 collaboration with Dua Lipa, which mixed several of his old tunes — most notably “Rocket Man” and “Sacrifice” — into a smooth piece of radio rock that took John into the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first time in over two decades.
In July, three men were charged in an attempt to sell the manuscripts, stolen property belonging to the leader of the Eagles. But the story begins in the 70s with an archived biography.

And the gambit is likely to work: Produced by Andrew Watt, who paired Ozzy Osbourne with Post Malone a few years ago for the oft-returned “Take What You Want,” “Hold Me Closer” is bop, banger, vibe: three and a half minutes of sparkling L.A. lady electro-pop sung by the most fabulous 75-year-old and the world’s leading 90’s blues baby. That you can’t really distinguish their voices thanks to the Autotune buckets only makes their pairing that much sweeter.
For Spears, 40, “Hold Me Closer” — which, according to the song’s credits, also interpolates “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” John’s chart-topping 1976 duet with Kiki Dee — serves as a kind of coming-out party following the recent legal a victory that freed her from the arduous conservation that had dominated her life and work for almost 14 years. The song is her first new music since her 2016 album, “Glory,” a fact that obviously left her feeling vulnerable as she recorded her song in Los Angeles.
“She’s been away for so long – there’s a lot of fear there because she’s been betrayed so many times and she hasn’t really been in the public eye officially for so long,” John told the Guardian in an interview published on Thursday. “We held her hand through the whole process, reassuring her that everything was going to be okay.”
Britney Spears is featured on the remake of Elton John’s “Hold Me Closer,” which debuted Thursday night and marked Spears’ first song in six years.

For John, a proudly acknowledged trendsetter, “Hold Me Closer” registers as the latest sign of his pop experience: Not only did he realize how much pent-up goodwill existed for Spears in the wake of #FreeBritney; he knew, in a summer defined by a house music revival, that the way to frame her return was with funky bass and air piano laid over a pounding four-on-the-floor groove.
And a melody, of course, that everyone already knows by heart. Remixing himself has long been a specialty of Elton John: Next month — not long before he plays Dodger Stadium in a repeat of his iconic 1975 gigs there — the singer’s 1997 remake of “Candle in the Wind,” whose lyrics about Marilyn Monroe he he Bernie Taupin reworked to honor the late Princess Diana, will be 25.
