Everything seems surreal: a small town hundreds of miles away from New York City has become the greatest power and influence for the furniture industry. The success of the first factory led to dozens more and at the turn of the century, furniture manufacturers organized and asked the mayor of the city to create a Southern Furniture Expo to compete with larger markets such as New York and Chicago. Finally, it was a small group of local industrialists who pledged the initial capital to establish the Expo, helped by a spirit of competition to prevent a local seller who took a space in town to set up his own furniture showcase. By 1909, industrialists teamed up with local vendors to organize the first Southern Furniture Market through their shared space. As the furniture industry in High Point grew steadily, in 1911 a local trade magazine called for the creation of one large showroom for the event, and their plea was heard. Event organizers spent the next decade building the Southern Furniture Exposition building, but in the meantime, the Market was gaining steam and by 1913 had become a respected annual event. The High Point Marketing Association was formed in 1914 to promote the sale of the city’s furniture, again illustrating the rapid momentum of the industry and the ingenuity of its early pioneers who understood the greater national demand for low and medium priced goods. Point was manufacturer. The new showroom, The Southern Furniture Exposition Building, was completed in June 1921. It cost about $1 million and had nearly 250,000 square feet of exhibition space. The first ever show attracted seven hundred (700) buyers from 100 cities across the country to see the 150 exhibitors, resulting in $2.25 million in total sales. The Great Depression of the Post-WWII Era: Survival to Prosper The following decade was difficult for High Point and the furniture industry, as the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression that followed forced about a third of factories out of business. the city is closed. However, in 1934, exhibitors returned to the Southern Furniture Exposition Building, which underwent an expansion in 1940. While the Southern Furniture Exposition was established during World War II, the US government made good use of the building for efforts the war . When the war ended in 1945, demand for affordable luxury exploded and the Richmond Federal Reserve announced that the Southeast was officially the furniture-producing center of the United States. The first postwar Exposition was held in 1947, and business in High Point was officially booming. Over the next three decades, the Exhibition continued to expand in space and number of exhibitors, while High Point gradually took over the furniture manufacturing market share in the United States. In 1980, the organizers of the furniture show in Dallas made an attempt to take over the territory of High Point to become the host of the largest home furniture market. High Point responded by shifting their focus to make the High Point Market a multifaceted experience for visitors. In 1982, High Point stopped showing its January and July regional events, which at the time were smaller, to focus on hosting two major events each year, in April and October. In 1989, the Southern Furniture Exposition Building became known as the International Home Furnishings Center (IHFC), setting the stage for it to become an international tour de force. The expansion of the main showroom, the establishment of several satellite showrooms, and the development of equipment supporting market events continued unabated for the next two decades. Taking notice of the large economic impact the furniture industry in High Point has on North Carolina, the state government began to take an active interest in supporting the High Point Market, investing in the event and surrounding infrastructure. The North Carolina Department of Transportation began funding free shuttles from 100 hotels and the three nearest major airports, increasing international recognition and growing attendance. The High Point Market has become so large and important nationally, that the sale of the building control company IHFC, now 3,500,000 million square feet after several expansions, was an international financial news headline in 2017. The High Point Market is now a bi-annual event that defines leadership in the global furniture industry. In addition to seeing the latest design innovations and adding to your list of sellers, the opportunity Market brings to network and have fun celebrating with fellow designers and design enthusiasts is invaluable. The Fall 2018 iteration will take place from October 13-17, and the town of High Point will be transformed into a giant furniture festival palace, full of taste and business people.
