Disney+ will soon begin streaming seasons 1 through 8 of “Home Improvement.” Whether you tuned in to watch the series every week in the 90s, enjoyed reruns on TV several years later, or have never heard of the series, get ready to binge-watch it on Disney + from 28 June 2023.
Home Improvement Starring Tim Allen Now Streaming On Hulu (over 200 Episodes )

Bob and Tim Taylor are ready to welcome a whole new generation of viewers to the comedy centered around renovation and remodeling projects. All of us here are definitely ready to marathon-watch our favorite episodes.
“Home Improvement” was a television sitcom that ran from 1991 to 1999. It starred Tim Allen, who played Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. In the series, Tim hosts a home improvement television show called “Tool Time”, alongside his co-host Al, played by Richard Karn.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt that it was based on the concept of ‘This Old House,'” Bob said in a 2010 interview with the Television Academy. “I don’t think Tim’s character is based on me, but I think Karn’s character is very much based on Norm. The plaid shirt and the armor. Yeah, I think there’s no doubt about that.”
Tim was known for his shenanigans, in which he tried to use “more power” where it wasn’t really needed. In the series, he would regularly go too far and cause some kind of disaster that his co-host Al couldn’t help but shake his head at.

“He was the rambling messy man of home improvement,” Bob said. “One of the first shows I remember, he put some kind of turbo on a garbage can. And we did another one where he put a helicopter engine on a lawnmower and we had a race.
The series also followed Tim and his wife Jill (played by Patricia Richardson) as they raised their three growing boys: Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and Mark (Taran Noah Smith). Tim would often seek advice from his insightful (but only visible from the nose up) neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman) to help him get through the challenges that came with running a television show while trying to be a good guy and to be a father.
Tim Taylor was certainly one of Tim Allen’s most well-known roles. In fact, Taylor even made a brief appearance on the final season of Allen’s more recent show, “Last Man Standing.”
“Tool Time” on “Home Improvement” was a parody of “This Old House”, which was hosted by Bob Vila from 1979 to 1989. While Al was clearly a big fan of Bob Vila, Tim was clearly jealous of him. Throughout the series, implicitly or explicitly, Tim tried to outdo everything Bob Vila did. When Bob Vila made guest appearances on “Home Improvement” and Tim’s show “Tool Time”, Tim’s attempts to do something bigger and better than Bob resulted in comedy gold for the viewers.

“I had a blast, had a great time, and the show was very well received,” said Bob. “They were all nice people to work with. So for me it was a treat.”
Even after all these years, it seems that Bob Vila is still alive in Tim Allen’s mind. Although, maybe in a different way than the fictional rivalry that was portrayed in the series. In 2021, Allen started his own home improvement series with Richard Karn, only this time it wasn’t a fictional parody. “Assembly Required” pits three contestants against each other to build a mystery project in their own garage or workshop.
While you should try to watch the entire series, you definitely won’t want to miss the “Home Improvement” episodes featuring Bob Vila as a guest star. “Home Improvement” ran for eight seasons on ABC and quickly became one of their most popular and successful shows. The series was very much the brainchild of Allen, who based much of the humor and characters on his stand-up comedy. The show’s format focused on a family man named Tim Taylor, as well as his wife and three children. Tim worked on an HGTV-like show called “Tool Time” which allowed him to channel his obsession with power tools and masculinity into a career.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Allen was paid about $1.25 million per episode on “Home Improvement” in 1998, which equates to about $2 million today. The price tag makes him the fifth highest paid TV actor of all time.

However, the salary of over $1 million per episode didn’t come until the show was almost over. For a majority of the series, The Richest reports that he made somewhere between $200,000 and $300,000 per episode. However, it’s worth noting that this was in the 1990s when sitcoms, especially if they were successful, rarely got less than a 24-episode run. So, Allen’s salary, even in the least lucrative year, was still multiplied by 24 to 28 episodes, depending on the season.
In addition, the series helped boost the comedian’s popularity and influence, allowing him to get big-budget movie roles in projects like “The Santa Clause,” “Toy Story” and “Galaxy Quest.” While the earnings from those movies didn’t come directly from the now 30-year-old piece of American television history, they are likely a direct result of Allen’s time on “Home Improvement.”
