How Much Of Our Water Is Polluted – The Environment Agency (EA) figures the number of incidents has risen by almost a quarter to 2021 compared with the previous year.
EA data analysis shows that 325 category one and two serious water pollution incidents have been reported in the year to March 2021, up 23% year to March 2020.

Reported pollution is given a category from one to four according to how harmful it is to the environment – one being the most severe.

A category one incident has a “major effect” on either water quality, human health, conservation or business, while a category two has a “significant effect”.
Mark Lloyd, chief executive of the River Trust, said these serious incidents “usually involve wildlife being killed, such as fish and invertebrates”, which can affect the food chains of other animals.
He also said “it is dangerous for people, because of the pathogens that can be found in polluted water”.
In the latest government figures from 2019, heavy pollution is mainly attributed to illegal waste activities such as fly-tipping, waste treatment, waste from water companies and agricultural activities.

Mr Lloyd said the latest figures showed “no sign” of water pollution across England decreasing, with most of it being caused by water companies and agricultural operations.
“These are just the most serious reasons – there are more that are less significant,” he added, warning that “a thousand exits to our rivers will be cut.”
Charles Watson, from the River Action campaign group, said that despite efforts to prosecute water companies for serious pollution, similar action against agricultural polluters had not been taken because of what he called “progressive de-funding” at the Environment Agency.
“The bottom line of this… [is] polluters can put as much dirt into our rivers as they want, they should never be safe in the knowledge,” he said.

Both groups have asked that resources be restored to the agency so that more polluters are found and prosecuted.

To prevent more news stories of agricultural drinking water contamination from last year’s records – and beyond – lawmakers must act immediately to reduce runoff from agricultural pollution into water. Farmers should be required to implement basic conservation practices to keep chemical compounds out of surface water and groundwater sources.

“About 10 weeks,” he said in Spanish. “We use well water for everything, like dripping, washing and washing dishes.”
