The Great Interior Design Challenge Season 1 – Firstly I would like to congratulate Sarah Mitchenall for winning The Great Interior Design Challenge. It’s a fantastic competition and does a lot for the designers on the show, but especially for the winners. I caught up with Sarah to ask a few questions.

My favorite project was Marlow, mainly because it surprised me, I thought it might look too stark because it was a brief that wasn’t my usual style, but actually the results were great and the sun was shining. Very enjoyable. It showed me that I could think outside the box, and I began to feel that I had strengths that I could build into my interior designs.

Once the glamor of being on TV fades, how do you think being on the show will help your business?

Reasons Why

Ha, I don’t know how glamorous that is, I’m just a normal mom, working constantly. I’m so down-to-earth that I can’t turn my head easily! That said… the experience was great (in retrospect) and it took me a while to digest everything I learned and see the road ahead.

This program has given me confidence in a field I knew I loved.

This show was a great catalyst, now I know what I want to do, we started small but we have big dreams.

I’ve enjoyed meeting people and the filming part, to see myself on telly, I don’t know for sure….I’ve met homeowners who have really embraced the challenge I’ve made, which is fantastic.

Working under such tight constraints really pushes you into the world of innovation, the mother of all innovation. I’ve always played with my house, but doing it briefly made me focus. It’s something I always have to do for my garden design, but I don’t have to do it for the interior. This process makes you stretch, see what’s around, research and develop a style.

I have always found inspiration in many forms, architecture, for example Le Corbusier has had a huge influence on how I see shape and form in both interiors and gardens. I’m obsessed with eras, how each is so definite and can date an interior with a simple piece of furniture, I like to mix them to bring warmth and character to a space.

I’m really bad at ripping pages out of magazines before people read them. The time spent working on the project focused on where my passion lies, on the one hand I love product design, and on the one hand I take great pleasure in delivering the interior that the client wants.

Eclectic isn’t necessarily the word, but there’s a joy in mixing vintage and modern designs together that’s not only achievable on a varied budget, but celebrates a wide world of designs.

Long Live Eccentric English Design

Wow, good question… We just finished filming last summer and I’ve since teamed up with a great friend, Alexa de Castilho, and our skills are very different, but we share an aesthetic. Working together brought something new and exciting to the table and we started an indoor business called Black Parrots Studio. As the name suggests we are both colorful people but of course black is always full stop.

In addition to creating new products such as lighting, fabrics, wallpaper and furniture, our mission is to create interiors for customers that I think can inspire one another.

We love to do collaborations and House of Hockney Fabrics featured heavily in the final. What I love about them is that they are a British brand who do what they do best and love something.

Abigail Ahern is another inspiring designer we love to work with. We absolutely love collaborations with companies like Designers Guild for fabrics and wallpaper. We live in Brighton, which has a wealth of designers we love to work with.

A New Way To Hand Me Down

I like to think that our future clients need translators, the designer to bring the best out of their homes and create living spaces that affect them in a positive way. We’re very adventurous designers so we absolutely love having clients who are willing to go that extra mile, but ultimately it’s about the client and their individual needs and that’s what inspires, for us it’s about doing what we love.

We know we’re starting small, but we’re thinking big, so it’s going to be an interesting journey.
